DESCRIPTION:This talk shows a year of activities in our bee yard by month and should give you the opportunity to see how we time our year of activities. The goal is to encourage you to plan YOUR BEE activities for the upcoming season. We will review how to make an action plan that meets your personal goals.\nKimberly Mehalick BioKim Mehalick is an engineer by day and beekeeper by night and weekend. Kim is an EAS Master Beekeeper. She is the past President of the Maryland State Beekeepers Association (MSBA) and is active in BUMBA (mentoring program lead\, manager of the teaching apiary)\, AABA (program lead) and DC beekeeping (education committee). She is also a member of MCBA and CCBA. She regularly teaches in short courses in a variety of topics.Kim has worked to increase education opportunities within MSBA\, and developed the popular nucs and splits class. She was the driving force behind the Beekeeping Year 2 and Beyond ten session class\, which became a reality once Mike Mehalick and Allen Storm joined the development/teaching team. We won the MSBA George Imirie Award for Education excellence in Nov 2023Kim is also a lifetime member of EAS. Her favorite part of beekeeping\, after mentoring new beekeepers\, is making queens through a variety of backyard beekeeper methods. Sharing the wonder of opening a hive\, and discovering how the bees think is a wonderful thing to do.Kim and Mike Mehalick keep about 100 hives on their property and various outyards as part of their “The Queen’s Honey” apiary. They run primarily medium equipment and sell nucs each spring. Since 2013\, they have also sold hive products from their company Clean Bee Soapworks including honey\, bees\, soap\, lotions\, bath bombs and lip balms.

DESCRIPTION:A Bee’s Eye View of Nucs and How they Adapt – a talk about making up nucs\, bee math and keeping the bees in sync with their natural age related job progression to lower the stresses of building a strong healthy colony. Using nucs as a first aid kit\, queen rearing\, queen mating\, queen introduction and overwintering are covered.\nJohn Benham has been a full time beekeeper for over 24 years\, operating 40 colonies and a breeder of quality queens and bees for over 20 years. He is an Eastern Apiculture Society Certified Master Beekeeper and Life Member of EAS. He is the President of the Mammoth Cave Area Beekeepers 2017 to present\, past member\, President/officer of four local associations since 2004\, 2015 Kentucky State Beekeepers President\, 2015 Kentucky State Beekeeper of the Year and a life member and advisor of the Kentucky Queen Bee Breeders Association. He shares his knowledge and love for the bees as a mentor\, speaker\, instructor\, volunteer and organizer at state\, local\, regional and national associations. Of all of John’s accomplishments as a beekeeper\, he is most proud of his survivor stock apiaries populated by locally trapped bees and local open mated queens where he annually produces well over twice the state average of honey per colony and is a past winner of two blue ribbons at the Kentucky State Fair.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Elaine Storm\nAs a former part-time school teacher\, I have a passion for learning and for teaching. We have a small farm and although none of our 7 grandchildren have yet been interested in working the honeybee hives\, they do love petting all the other animals we’ve got. \nMy husband and I have been working bees for about 15 years. Although my husband is the main beekeeper\, I do help work the hives\, have attended beekeeping courses and have the hands-on experience. Three years ago\, I attended the Eastern Apicultural Society’s Bee Conference\, where I began my Apitherapy journey. Since then\, I have attended more Apitherapy conferences and have become passionate about how all the products from the hive can benefit us in health and healing ways. From pollen\, honey\, and propolis to royal jelly and drone brood homogenate – the bees can help keep not only their own hives healthy but share their products with us so we might also gain some health benefits. \nFrom making tinctures\, to bee sting therapy\, to collecting recipes for healing\, I’m passionate about it all! My goal is to learn enough about Apitherapy to help relieve pain that people may be suffering from and to do that in an easy\, natural way. \nAs a beekeeping community\, we are able to have multiple medicine cabinets in our own backyards!\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				If you have a request or suggestion for a topic or speaker please CONTACT US.
