In the spring of 2015, the CMBA joined the University of Maryland’s Sentinel Hive Project. As part of that program, CMBA set up two electronic hive scales, and started pollen sampling and collecting bees from the host apiary on a regular basis to determine disease and parasite loading. This is part of a nationwide data collection effort under the auspices of The Bee Informed Partnership.
The scales are read via Bluetooth by a smart phone. The data is forwarded to BIP to become part of the national record. The pollen and bee samples are forwarded to the UMD lab monthly for analysis.
If you are interested in this program, or would like to become part of this or future research projects, you can write, and also check out the Sentinel Hive Project website. While you’re at it, check out the two scales – online! – here and here.
